Ubisoft has confirmed that Assassin’s Creed Shadows will run on Steam Deck at launch, marking an unexpected turnaround from earlier statements that stated the game would not support the handheld device due to performance concerns. Previously, Ubisoft deemed the Steam Deck’s specifications to be “below our minimum specs for PC.”
So, what prompted this shift? It appears that additional testing has yielded favorable results, leading to the decision. Ubisoft stated, “We are happy to say that we are supporting Steam Deck at launch and are currently awaiting the level of classification from Valve.” More details will be communicated soon.
The Steam Deck OLED, released in November 2023, has shown impressive performance, successfully running popular titles like Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.
Despite the positive news, there are reservations about the gameplay experience on the Steam Deck. While multiple heavy-hitting titles are confirmed as “Verified” for Steam Deck, their visuals on the small screen may compromise quality.
In essence, if the Steam Deck is your main gaming platform, then look forward to Assassin’s Creed Shadows. It’s a promising sign that developers are beginning to cater to the growing handheld market.
