Spectre Divide's Shutdown Signals Tough Times for Game Developers
The free-to-play FPS Spectre Divide will cease operations within 30 days, marking a disappointing end for the title launched just six months ago.
The free-to-play FPS Spectre Divide will close within 30 days, and developers Mountaintop Studios will disband by the end of the week. This decision comes just six months after the game launched on Steam.
In a message signed by CEO Nate Mitchell, the team indicated that a lack of player uptake following the launch of its first season was a primary factor in their decision. “Unfortunately, the Season 1 launch hasn’t achieved the level of success we needed to sustain the game and keep Mountaintop afloat,” the letter states.
The game’s player count saw a peak of 400,000 in its first week but has dwindled to averages of just over 1,000 concurrent players. This decline in players indicates a challenging environment for new titles competing against major franchises like Call of Duty and Fortnite.
Nate Mitchell further noted that despite efforts to find additional funding or a publisher, they could not secure the necessary support. The full statement is available on their social media channels.
