Rebellion's CEO Highlights Strategy to Avoid Layoffs Amid Industry Challenges
Rebellion's CEO discusses the studio's strategy in managing budget and scope to avoid layoffs in the gaming industry.
PC Gamer’s Joshua Wolens recently discussed with Rebellion’s CEO Jason Kingsley regarding the survival FPS game Atomfall and how they managed to avoid layoffs despite the industry’s tumultuous landscape following the COVID boom.
“We don’t want to hire and fire people all the time.”
- Jason Kingsley
Translation: We prefer stability over constant layoffs.
Kingsley stressed that their strategy doesn’t solely rely on skill but also involves disciplined budget management. While they maintain significant funding, as Kingsley noted, they focus on creating games that can realistically turn a profit without inflating their budgets unnecessarily.
In the past five years, this approach has led to the production of successful titles like Sniper Elite 5, Evil Genius 2, and Zombie Army 4. However, it’s also about preference. Kingsley expressed a preference for creating smaller, focused games as opposed to expansive titles, stating:
“I prefer a small, really good game rather than a really big game that isn’t focused on what’s important for the player.”
- Jason Kingsley
Translation: Quality over quantity is our mantra.
He elaborated on their game production philosophy, balancing established titles with experimental projects to maintain job security within their organization. “We try aiming for two-thirds being sequels or brands, and one-third experimental titles.”
In a gaming landscape currently fraught with uncertainty and job losses, Kingsley’s emphasis on maintaining a delicate balance between ambition and sustainability has positioned Rebellion as a sturdy entity trying to navigate through turbulent times.
