Nintendo's Landmark Piracy Victory in France Impacts European File Sharing

A recent ruling in France declares that file-sharing companies must remove illegal game copies upon request, heralding a significant win for Nintendo.

Nintendo has successfully concluded a lengthy legal battle against Dstorage, the operator of the file-sharing site 1fichier.com, with the French Supreme Court ruling that the firm must remove pirated games upon the copyright holder’s request.

This outcome results from years of litigation, positioning it as a critical precedent across Europe for file-sharing platforms, which now bear the responsibility of removing illegal game copies to avoid severe penalties.

Nintendo expressed satisfaction with the judgement, declaring it essential not merely for themselves, but for the entire gaming sector, stating:

“Nintendo is pleased with the Court’s finding of liability against Dstorage and believes that it is significant not only for Nintendo, but for the entire games industry.”

The ruling reinforces that share hosting providers cannot be seen as havens for illegal content and signals that actions against piracy will be more robust in Europe moving forward.
