Overview of WoW’s New Patch

The Undermine(d) patch for World of Warcraft is now live, featuring an unprecedented jazz soundtrack. As I explored the goblin city of Undermine, I was pleasantly surprised by the prominence of the game’s new music, which stands out from its usually ambient style.

According to a recent developer diary, the game’s composers collaborated with a live jazz ensemble. This led to much of the music being improvised during recording sessions.

LEAD COMPOSER LEO KALISKI explains:

“When recording with live musicians, you need to decide if you’re okay with their interpretation, given the limited session time, or if you want them to redo it to fit the original vision. This time, we encouraged them to innovate. Typically, those improvisations made their way into the final track.”

MUSIC DIRECTOR DEREK DUKE adds:

“By giving the musicians context about the goblin characters, we gained more emotional depth in their performances.”

The upbeat jazz tunes truly embody the spirit of goblin culture, enhancing the gameplay experience significantly. This innovative approach might pave the way for more musical experimentation in future content for World of Warcraft.
