Blighttown's Construction Unveiled by Dark Souls Modder

The co-creator of a significant Dark Souls mod uncovers the origins of one of the game's most notorious areas.

If you’ve experienced Dark Souls, you likely have something to say about Blighttown—not all of it positive. This area is notorious for its flimsy pathways and relentless poison dart shooters, plus the frustrating framerate drops found on Xbox 360.

Recently, a significant figure in the Dark Souls modding scene, Grimrukh, known for co-creating the ambitious mod Dark Souls: Nightfall, resurfaced to share some architectural insights about Blighttown.

In a recent post on social media, Grimrukh revealed that the area was seemingly created using just ten bits of wood, which serves as a stark reminder of how something ominous can arise from humble beginnings. “Fun fact: the entirety of Blighttown… is built from scaled copies of just these ten bits of wood.”

This revelation paints the developers at FromSoftware in a fascinating light; their resourceful use of assets has drawn criticism in the past, yet it has undeniably shaped a generation of gaming experiences. While players now draw upon modern systems for a smoother experience, these original design choices still provoke profound reactions.

Grimrukh also shared that while he had been silent for a while, he was not ill as previously suggested; rather, he has been diligently working on Nightfall, hinting at continued development for fans eagerly awaiting its release.
