EA Unveils Source Code Release for Classic Command and Conquer Titles with Steam Workshop Features
Electronic Arts has taken a significant step in preserving its gaming history by releasing the source code for various Command and Conquer (C&C) games, including Tiberian Dawn, Red Alert, C&C Renegade, and C&C Generals and Zero Hour. They will be made available under the GPL license, enabling fans to modify and share them freely.
New Modding Support via Steam Workshop
In addition to the source code release, EA has enabled Steam Workshop support for titles such as C&C Renegade, C&C Generals and Zero Hour, C&C 3 Tiberium Wars, Kane’s Wrath, and C&C 4 Tiberium Twilight. The company has updated tools such as the Mission Editor and World Builder, allowing players to publish their custom maps directly.
Modding Support Pack
Moreover, EA will provide a modding support pack containing essential files like XML, Schema, Script, Shader, and Map files for games using the SAGE engine, enhancing the modding experience.
While this isn’t the full remaster fans may have hoped for, it is a positive move for the C&C community, showcasing EA’s commitment to its legacy. According to producer Jim Vessella, this initiative was spurred by insights from community veteran Luke ‘CCHyper’ Feenan, who provided feedback on potential improvements to the Ultimate Collection.
This announcement signals a renewed interest in the Command and Conquer franchise, allowing fans to enjoy and expand upon the classics that defined real-time strategy gaming.
