Obsidian's CEO Discusses Studio Growth Amid Game Releases
Obsidian Entertainment's CEO Feargus Urquhart shares insights about the studio's expansion and their recent success in releasing multiple games.
In a recent discussion, Feargus Urquhart, the CEO of Obsidian Entertainment, highlighted the studio’s expansion since its acquisition by Microsoft. The company has nearly reached 300 employees, still considered lean compared to larger triple-A studios.
“When we came on with XGS and Xbox, we were about 170, 180 people,” Urquhart explained during an interview with IGN. This growth has been accompanied by successful partnerships with developers like Heavy Iron and Beamdog, contributing to the studio’s agile productivity.
Obsidian has released three notable titles since 2020 ( Grounded, Pentiment, and Avowed), with a fourth title, The Outer Worlds 2, expected by the year’s end. This remarkable productivity is especially noteworthy amid the industry’s trend towards larger teams and longer development cycles.
“Our goal is to make RPGs that last for 100 years without aggressively expanding our team size or aiming for sky-high profits,” Urquhart commented, emphasizing the studio’s strategy for sustainable growth without compromising on game quality.
The focus on disciplined development has allowed Obsidian to maintain high standards in design and narrative, proving that smaller teams can indeed deliver exceptional gaming experiences.
