GTA 3 Almost Had Players Obeying Traffic Rules, But It Was Scrapped

A former developer shares insights on a removed feature from GTA 3 that could have made players adhere to traffic laws.

GTA 3 almost introduced a feature that would have required players to follow traffic laws, as revealed by former Rockstar developer Obbe Vermeij in a recent post on X. Although it was a bold idea inspired by games such as Mafia 1, the feature was ultimately scrapped after a lack of support from the team. Vermeij reminisced:

“During GTA 3, I gave players a 1-star wanted level for running red lights, but alas, this was not popular with the team. I quickly removed it.”
(Translation: I assigned a penalty for ignoring traffic signals, but the idea was not well-received, so I abandoned it.)

Many wondered if future installments like GTA 6 might revisit this concept, but Vermeij expressed skepticism. “It was really annoying,” he stated. “I’m sure they’ll conclude it’s a bad idea.”
Thus, it looks like the chaos of the streets will continue unhindered in the world of Grand Theft Auto.
