Gentoo Linux Begins Shift Away from GitHub to Codeberg

Gentoo Linux is transitioning from GitHub to Codeberg due to concerns over Microsoft's AI Copilot features affecting its repositories.

Gentoo Linux is embarking on its long-term move away from Microsoft’s GitHub to Codeberg, an open-source git-hosting service operated by a Berlin-based non-profit. This shift is largely prompted by Microsoft’s repeated attempts to enforce the use of Copilot in GitHub repositories. The company has a strong appetite for training data, utilizing public repositories from GitHub to support its AI training.

In a recent retrospective, Gentoo highlighted plans to gradually transition its mirrors from GitHub, stating, “mostly due to the continuous attempts to force Copilot usage for our repositories.” Gentoo indicated that it now has a presence on Codeberg, inviting contributions to the Gentoo repository.
