'We can't accommodate more than two colors at this moment' is the strange reasoning X offers for discontinuing its dimmed theme

The tech community is baffled by X's rationale for limiting color themes to only two, with many calling for the reinstatement of the previously available options.

While evolution is a given in the realms of technology and the internet, there’s typically a solid reasoning behind such alterations. Nevertheless, when X unveiled its justification for reducing the available theme options, the feedback indicated that the decision is both unreasonable and devoid of logic.

It all seems to originate from a single tweet by Nikita Bier, X’s product lead (via Futurism). In response to a query regarding the significant reduction to only two themes—default and dark mode—Bier stated: “We don’t have the capacity to support more than two colors right now.”

“We don’t have the capacity to support more than two colors right now. But feedback noted: we are looking into lightening the black on web.” - Nikita Bier, February 12, 2026

Pardon my confusion, but what? In what universe does that statement hold any reason? X manages an extensive server housing numerous terabytes of data; thus, the addition of a few megabytes for an extra theme wouldn’t even make a dent. Furthermore, once a theme is created, it requires virtually zero upkeep, so staffing is not an issue either.

This statement has the potential to evolve into an internet meme due to its sheer absurdity. At the very least, I now have a ready-made excuse for everything at home. “Sorry, but I can’t walk to the kitchen to fetch a snack; I don’t have the ability to use two legs right now.”

It remains uncertain why such a decision was made, especially when the demand for a previously utilized ‘dim’ mode was not exceptional—many who did enjoy it are clearly at a loss now, alongside those who prefer the darker theme. Bier has cautiously acknowledged the outcry by stating: “[F]eedback noted: we are looking into lightening the black on web.” This leaves me perplexed, as it raises more questions than answers.
