New Study Shows Minor Burn-In Damage After 3,000 Hours on OLED Monitors

A recent evaluation reveals that despite concerns, OLED burn-in may not pose significant problems for gamers.

OLED burn-in is a well-known issue, but a new assessment suggests it’s less concerning for users of WOLED and QD OLED displays.

According to the Optimum YouTube channel, they monitored a 32-inch 4K LG WOLED screen for roughly 3,000 hours over two years, discovering minimal burn-in effects. This observation is particularly relevant since it offers a comparable assessment to a long-standing test focused on Samsung’s QD-OLED technology.

During their testing, it was noted that the monitor was typically set between 80% and 100% brightness, with features like Windows dark mode and automatic taskbar hiding utilized to mitigate burn-in risks. Despite this, some faint burn marks were identified, notably a slight discoloration corresponding to static screen elements from Overwatch.

The findings emphasize that while concerns about OLED burn-in are valid, they may not be substantial enough to deter gamers from choosing OLED panels. Recommendations for OLED users include using dark themes, avoiding static elements on-screen, and utilizing built-in panel maintenance routines.
