Tencent Assures No Promotions for Horizon-like Game Amid Sony's Legal Action
Tencent vows to refrain from marketing its Horizon-inspired title, Light of Motiram, while a legal battle with Sony unfolds.
This might seem ironic since you’re reading it on PC Gamer’s front page, but Tencent has committed to halting all marketing efforts for its Horizon-like survival game Light of Motiram. No promotional moves will occur until a judge makes a decision regarding Sony’s request for a preliminary injunction against the game.
This promise surfaced in a recent court filing made on December 1, amid ongoing legal disputes between Tencent and Sony. Earlier this year, Sony launched a lawsuit against Tencent, asserting that Light of Motiram closely resembles its high-profile game, Horizon Zero Dawn, and accused it of being a “slavish clone.”
In response, Tencent has taken steps such as removing Horizon-like elements from the game’s store page and delaying its release from late 2025 to Q4 2027, a significant two-year extension likely aimed at avoiding further legal complications.
Despite these adjustments, Sony shows no signs of easing its pursuit. In October, they filed for an injunction against the game, claiming that it utilizes any content “copied or derived” from the Horizon series. They expressed skepticism regarding Tencent’s postponed release timeline, suggesting that the legal confrontation may still be ongoing by late 2027. This implies that Tencent may attempt to launch Light of Motiram regardless, hoping the legal challenges will resolve favorably.
While public promotional activities for Light of Motiram will pause, it indicates a potential settlement is being sought as the legal teams from both companies agreed on a timeline to address these legal questions. The hearing concerning Sony’s request for a preliminary injunction is set to occur on January 29, 2026.
