Tim Cain, co-creator of Fallout, shares insights on canon and interpretation

In a recent video, Tim Cain discusses the fluidity of canon within the Fallout franchise, emphasizing that interpretation is personal and subjective.

In his latest vlog, Tim Cain, a key figure behind Fallout, delves into the complex discussions surrounding narrative canon and interpretation in games. He highlights that, although canon is dictated by the rights holders, personal interpretations can vary, and no one is necessarily wrong in their view.

The video, titled Let’s Talk About Canon, explores the nuances of storytelling in long-running franchises like Fallout, where countless contributors can influence the narrative. Ultimately, Cain asserts:

“Canon is what it is. If the people who own [Fallout] say Harold’s a ghoul, he’s a ghoul. I still think he’s a weird thing that’s neither, but you may think he’s a mutant. And we can all be right…”

Cain concludes by stating that the notion of community sentiment shouldn’t dictate canon, emphasizing that understanding diverse interpretations enriches the conversation about games.
