New Steam Beta Introduces 'Suspicious Chat Warning' for Potentially Malicious Messages

Steam adds a late but vital feature to flag dubious messages in chat, improving user safety against scams.

In a significant update, Steam has introduced a feature designed to alert users about messages that may pose a risk. This new warning will display at the top of a chat window when a potentially malicious message is sent, marking a crucial step in combating scams that have targeted users for years.

Why This Change Matters

Given that Steam has been operational for over 20 years, the addition of this simple alert is a positive development. Users have often been deceived by accounts impersonating their friends, leading to various scams. This pop-up will serve as an essential first line of defense against such attempts, disabling links while the warning is active, requiring users to acknowledge the potential threat before proceeding.

What Else is New?

Along with the chat warnings, the beta release includes improvements to Xbox 360 controller mapping in Linux and fixes for timeline markers in game recordings. Moreover, this beta phase will provide Valve with valuable data as they work on enhancing security further.

Join the Beta

While the update is currently only available in the Steam client beta, users can easily join by modifying their ‘Settings’ in Steam. It’s expected that these security features will eventually be rolled out in standard updates, making gaming on Steam safer for everyone.
