Grokipedia, the AI-driven online encyclopedia from xAI, is now available. Its initial release boasts over 885,000 entries but has sparked debate over its content’s authenticity. Visitors might notice many articles appear similar to those found on Wikipedia, often with disclaimers stating, “The content is adapted from Wikipedia, licensed under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 License.”
Despite the bold assertion from Elon Musk that Grokipedia will significantly surpass Wikipedia, critiques highlight instances of direct copying, raising questions about its credibility.
Lauren Dickinson, a spokesperson for the Wikimedia Foundation, defended Wikipedia’s model, emphasizing the importance of human contribution in maintaining neutrality and a diverse knowledge base. “Wikipedia’s knowledge is—and will always be—human,” she stated, reiterating the necessity for genuine human oversight.
