RuneScape Players Vote on Microtransaction System Removal

Following rising discontent with the game's microtransaction layer, RuneScape is asking players to vote on whether to eliminate the Treasure Hunter feature, with overwhelming support already evident.

After spending the year discussing the necessity to overhaul the much-criticized microtransaction structure in RuneScape, Jagex is now involving the player community in the decision-making process. The company has launched a poll on its official site, where if over 100,000 players cast their votes to eliminate the Treasure Hunter feature—a key component of the game’s microtransactions—it will be removed.

Jagex CEO John Bellamy stated that previous monetization methods have undermined the integrity of RuneScape. “The most concerning elements of our MTX (microtransaction) systems have been those that allowed players to bypass core gameplay,” he added, emphasizing that this vote is aimed at restoring fairness and enriching player experience.

A few hours after the poll opened, it has already gathered significant support, crossing half of its goal. The poll also links closely to a broader initiative to enhance game integrity by cleaning up the game environment and addressing problematic elements within daily challenges.

Given the strong initial response, it appears likely that the elimination of the microtransaction system is imminent, showcasing a renewed commitment from Jagex to its player base.
