Amazon Clarifies Future Plans for Crystal Dynamics' Tomb Raider Project

Despite recent layoffs at Amazon, the Tomb Raider game developed with Crystal Dynamics remains in progress, assuring fans about its future.

Despite the layoffs at Amazon, the Tomb Raider game collaboration between Amazon Games and Crystal Dynamics is actively being developed. A recent internal memo from Amazon provided reassurance on the game’s progression, yet specific details about the title remain scarce.

On October 28, Amazon made headlines by laying off over 14,000 employees as part of a restructuring effort aimed at minimizing bureaucracy. This transition significantly impacted Amazon Games, particularly in its Irvine and San Diego studios, leading to substantial staffing reductions. Consequently, the MMORPG New World: Aeternum will pause any new content updates but its servers will remain active through 2026.

As for the Tomb Raider project, it continues to move forward. Amazon Executive Steve Boom indicated in the memo that the collaboration with Crystal Dynamics would not be wasted, underscoring ongoing developments on various projects, including the anticipated Tomb Raider installment. However, additional insights about the game were not disclosed at this time.

Notably, the upcoming Tomb Raider game is confirmed to utilize Unreal Engine 5 and is designed as a single-player adventure. Furthermore, Lara Croft’s new design will blend elements from her original look and the Survivor trilogy, featuring a light blue tank top and brown cargo shorts, as recently highlighted in crossovers with titles like Dead By Daylight.

While good news for Tomb Raider fans, the development comes alongside challenging times for Crystal Dynamics, which recently faced its own layoffs and project cancellations.
