PlayStation Plus to Welcome a Beloved PS2 Fighting Classic
PlayStation Plus subscribers can look forward to the addition of Soulcalibur 3, a renowned PS2 fighting game, to the service by the end of 2025.
Upcoming Addition to PlayStation Plus
PlayStation Plus is preparing to add Soulcalibur 3 to its Classics roster before the end of 2025, as confirmed by Bandai Namco Entertainment. Presently, only one title is scheduled for November’s lineup of new PlayStation Plus games; however, Soulcalibur 3 is anticipated to be available by the end of December at the latest.
Soulcalibur 3
Gameplay and Features
As the successor to Soul Edge, which debuted in 1996, the first Soulcalibur quickly rose to fame, becoming one of the standout arcade games of 1998, known for its innovative 3D fighting mechanics where characters employed a variety of melee weapons. After its transition to the Sega Dreamcast in 1999, the game’s popularity soared, making it one of the best-selling titles on the platform, only eclipsed by Sonic Adventure.
What to Expect from Soulcalibur 3 in PS Plus
Bandai Namco announced via a post on X that Soulcalibur 3 will join the PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog by late 2025. While an exact release date has yet to be disclosed, this inclusion is sure to offer players access to what many consider one of the best games in the Soulcalibur series. Featuring a versatile roster of more than 40 characters, Soulcalibur 3 maintains the weapon-based combat style characteristic to its predecessors while introducing additional game modes such as the narrative-rich Tales of Souls and the strategic Chronicles of the Sword, which combines fighting elements with real-time strategy gameplay.
With new releases added every month, the PlayStation Plus subscription service currently offers three tiers — Essential, Extra, and Premium. Subscribers at higher tiers gain access to an expanded library of games, services, and rewards. For those in North America and Europe, the Classics Catalog adds retro elements to the service, allowing gamers to experience beloved titles from the original PlayStation, PS2, and PlayStation Portable on modern consoles. Thus, while players will need to subscribe at the highest tier for Soulcalibur 3’s content, the game will also be available for individual purchase, compatible with both PS4 and PS5 platforms.
