Large portions of the internet continue to struggle to recover from the recent AWS outage, primarily triggered by a DNS error. Notably affected platforms included Fortnite, Roblox, and Reddit, which saw significant disruptions.
As services begin to recover, analysts are now estimating the financial damages incurred. Mehdi Daoudi, the CEO of internet monitoring firm Catchpoint, addressed the issue stating, “The incident highlights the complexity and fragility of the internet, as well as how much every aspect of our work depends on the internet to work.”
Daoudi predicts that the total financial damage could reach into the hundreds of billions when considering loss in productivity for countless workers and halted business operations ranging from airlines to factories. With AWS dominating roughly 30% of the global cloud market, the results of this outage could ripple through various sectors, significantly impacting e-commerce operations, including those of Amazon itself.
Estimates suggest Amazon was losing around $72 million per hour during the downtime, with additional impacts on other services leading to a broader collective loss of approximately $75 million per hour across multiple companies. The actual damage will only continue to unfold as businesses assess the implications of the outage.
