Originally announced in 2017 with Donnie Yen as the lead, the project faced numerous challenges. Despite earlier reports of it being shelved, Liu has taken over to ensure its development continues.
The rights for Sleeping Dogs belong to Square Enix, and Liu emphasized that the company has been supportive. He remarked, “[Square Enix is] absolutely great; it’s the [film] studios that don’t seem to understand how important this IP is, BUT we will get them there.” Liu’s determination hints at his dedication to making this adaptation a success.
