The Catholic Church Advocates for Global AI Regulation as the Pope Addresses Technological Concerns

Pope Leo XIV emphasizes the need for a global AI regulatory framework to mitigate risks associated with artificial intelligence, advocating for disarmament in technology.

Pope Leo XIV has focused on artificial intelligence (AI) as a pivotal theme of his papacy. In his inaugural address on May 10, he referred to today’s technological advancements as a new industrial revolution, subsequently expressing concern over AI, labeling it as a potential threat to human dignity and rights. During a recent Vatican seminar named Digital Rerum Novarum: Artificial Intelligence for Peace, Social Justice, and Integral Human Development, participants advocated for a suspension of the AI arms race. They aligned with the Pope’s call for the “audacity of disarmament”.

Moreover, Pope Leo XIV highlighted the necessity for a cohesive global framework for AI regulation, which should be enforced and supported by major technology companies. His message emphasized the potential of AI to benefit humanity, stating, “While undoubtedly an exceptional product of human ingenuity, AI is above all else a tool.” He underscored the importance of ensuring that this tool promotes a just global society.

In light of the ongoing discussions surrounding AI, there is a notable push for the establishment of ’neuro-rights’ aimed at protecting individuals from invasive technologies. The seminar resulted in the formation of the AI Knowledge Network for Integral Human Development, aiming to foster ethical and inclusive AI development, particularly in Latin America.
