When you think of successful indie games, Dead Cells comes to mind, recognized as a phenomenal example within the roguelike genre. However, the developer Motion Twin opts to embark on a new adventure rather than follow the anticipated path of a sequel. Co-creative director and game designer Yannick Berthier shed light on this decision, stating that the team, which consists of nine partners, chooses to create based on their interests rather than outside commercial pressures.
“If we were a ‘business,’ we would be talking about Dead Cells 2 right now. We are not talking about Dead Cells 2. We are talking about Windblown, because we are a collective of individuals that are creative and want to create stuff.”
This approach signals a dedication to creative expression within gaming, allowing the team to work on new projects that excite them rather than adhering to expectations.
While Dead Cells has sold over 10 million copies, providing the team with a comfortable position to make unconventional choices, they acknowledge the external pressures to produce sequels. “Externally, it’s super strong,” Berthier mentions, referring to the anticipation for Dead Cells 2. However, the team remains steadfast in its decision, continuing to shape its creative journey with Windblown, currently in early access on Steam.
