'The liberty we enjoy within this sci-fi realm is somewhat unnerving': upcoming FPS Den of Wolves revealed in new studio documentary

Discover the inspirations behind the co-op heist game's development and the hurdles faced by GTFO.

Put on your RGB hockey mask, equip yourself, and prepare to plunge into people’s minds in Den of Wolves, a futuristic co-op heist FPS from the creators of Payday 1 and 2. PC Gamer visited Stockholm to converse with the developers at 10 Chambers and gain insight into the mechanics of Den of Wolves.

Unlike Payday, which features a more realistic setting, Den of Wolves unapologetically embraces sci-fi elements. Drawing inspiration from films like Inception and The Matrix, the developers suggest that working within a sci-fi framework lets them explore unique challenges creatively. COO Svante Vinternatt remarked, “the freedom we have with this sci-fi space is a bit terrifying.”

The game unfolds in the dystopian Midway City, an unregulated, corporation-dominated metropolis nestled in the Pacific Ocean between the US and Japan.

In addition to exciting heist scenarios, the game incorporates mind-bending elements where players delve into the brains of high-value targets. Team members will shift into a virtual reality realm, engaging in diverse challenges such as navigating perilous platforming segments or surviving monsters in dense forests. This innovative approach ensures fresh, dynamic gameplay.

With adrenaline-pumping music from audio director Simon Viklund, the game aims to enhance the immersive experience. “Primarily it’s supposed to be adrenaline-pumping music that makes you feel badass,” he stated, emphasizing that subtlety is not on the agenda during high-octane shootouts.

As in any heist scenario, disorder erupts when plans falter. Jake Tucker remarked, “when the enemies start to push from every direction, the best you can do is huddle close to your teammates and try to stay alive.”

Regular playtests among the development team are vital according to Ulf Anderson. He stated, “being able to play your game like a player would is key to us.”

If chaotic gameplay sounds appealing to you, be glad to know that Den of Wolves will be accessible in early access. For updates, keep an eye on the Steam page.
