Pushback Grows Against Saudi Arabia's Buyout of Electronic Arts as Developers Seek Regulatory Attention

The United Videogame Workers United union is advocating for regulatory scrutiny of Saudi Arabia's $55 billion acquisition of Electronic Arts to safeguard jobs and creative freedoms.

The $55 billion acquisition of Electronic Arts by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund is encountering significant opposition. The United Videogame Workers United union has issued a statement urging regulators to ensure that the transaction prioritizes job security and maintains creative independence within the company.

“EA is not a struggling company. With annual revenues reaching $7.5 billion and $1 billion in profit each year, EA is one of the largest videogame developers and publishers in the world,” the union asserted.

The union emphasized that the success of EA is driven by its employees, who deserve representation during negotiations on such impactful deals. They are particularly concerned about potential job losses or studio closures post-acquisition, which they believe would serve to inflate investor profits rather than strengthen the company.

Additionally, the discussion around the acquisition is magnified by US senators expressing their deep concern over possible national security implications of the deal. The union is calling on workers in the industry to rise and voice their opinions to protect their livelihoods and creative contributions.
