The long-awaited Siege update for Dwarf Fortress is set to arrive on November 3, promising to change how players defend their fortresses against goblin hordes. Previously simple goblin sieges, which could be easily managed by seasoned players, will now include powerful goblin battering rams and tactical troll engineers that aim to dismantle existing dwarf defenses.
In a preview video, Tarn Adams, creator of Dwarf Fortress, described how these new types of invaders will force players to adapt their strategies. Historically, players have built elaborate defense systems—like magma traps and spear-wielding dwarfs—to thwart goblin invasions, limiting their options for attack. With the introduction of battering rams and trolls trained to build and destroy, invaders will be equipped to navigate through these defenses more effectively.
Existing siege weapons, such as ballistas and catapults, will also receive enhancements. Players will gain new capabilities, including the construction of crossbow emplacements capable of rapid fire. For those who prefer traditional siege experiences, settings will allow the toggling off of certain enemy behaviors like digging and destruction.
This update is set to transform the way players engage in siege warfare within the Dwarf Fortress universe, fostering fresh tactics in both assaulting and defending strongholds.
