Glen Schofield Critiques Elon Musk's AI Game Claims: 'He’s Full of Crap'

The creator of Dead Space supports AI in game development but responds critically to Elon Musk's timeline for an AI-generated game.

Glen Schofield, the director known for his work on Dead Space, remains an advocate for the integration of AI within the realm of game development. While he supports innovations like generative AI for brainstorming purposes, he questions the ambitious timeline proposed by Elon Musk regarding the development of an AI-generated game within a year.

During a keynote presentation at the Gamescom Asia x Thailand Games Show, Schofield discussed how he employs tools like Midjourney to aid in visual concept generation during early phases of game design. He expressed skepticism about Musk’s assertion that xAI could produce a complete game in such a short span. “A year?” he responded, visibly surprised. “He’s full of crap.”

Schofield raised concerns over the inadequacy of current AI tools for serious game development, stressing that real game developers need to be involved in the design and creation of such technology for it to meet industry standards. He argued that although some jobs may be eliminated due to advancements in AI, a new wave of job opportunities will arise as well. He concluded by urging developers to learn and leverage AI to enhance their efficiency and creativity.

“History has shown us that every major technological leap creates whole new industries, opportunities, and specialists…Yes, some jobs are going to shift, they may go away, but new ones—millions of them—will be created over the years.”
