The Strong Lobby for Third-Person Mode Influences Obsidian in The Outer Worlds 2

Fans have successfully compelled Obsidian to implement a third-person camera for The Outer Worlds 2, in what proves to be a significant design choice.

The introduction of third-person mode in The Outer Worlds 2 stems from an unexpected fan demand. Initially, Obsidian Entertainment did not plan to include a third-person perspective in the game, aiming instead to maintain a strictly first-person view. However, in a conversation with Game Informer, game director Brandon Adler shared that as development progressed, the team recognized that many players were eager for this feature.

Adler recalled, “About halfway through, we were like, ‘I think people are really going to want this,’ so we did an evaluation of how difficult it was going to be to implement it.” This change illustrates how player feedback can influence the direction of game design.

While numerous ideas were proposed during development, Adler emphasized the need for restraint in implementing features, noting, “It’s too expensive for us to do some of these things; maybe on the next one.”
