Bungie Makes a Bold Move by Eliminating Newly Introduced Currency in Destiny 2, Offering 777,777 Unstable Cores as an Apology
Bungie responds to player backlash by scrapping a newly implemented currency in Destiny 2, distributing a large amount of unstable cores to players as compensation.
Overview
Bungie has decided to retract a newly introduced currency called ‘unstable cores’ from Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate, which was released on July 15, 2025. This decision comes amid a wave of player dissatisfaction due to the excessive costs associated with using these unstable cores to enhance gear.

Unstable cores were designed to allow players to infuse gear and raise power levels, yet they proved overly burdensome. Players quickly found that the number of cores required vastly outweighed the amount they could earn from dismantling loot, leading to frustration for those trying to enhance multiple builds.
In a bid to amend this, Bungie is now issuing 777,777 unstable cores to all players via a catch-up chest in the Tower while preparing to phase out this currency entirely. Bungie clarified,
“Overall, we’ve found that Unstable Cores have been too restrictive across power levels and fail to drive interesting buildcraft decisions.”
The studio plans to revert to using Enhancement Cores and Glimmer for gear infusion, leaving players in a more manageable situation moving forward. This latest move seems to be a desperate yet necessary attempt by Bungie to regain player trust amidst ongoing criticisms surrounding the game’s balance.
