I was born around the time the PlayStation 1 launched, and my childhood was marked by games like Spyro: The Dragon. Occasionally, I stumbled upon demo discs for titles that were slightly over my skill level. These included iconic games that demanded precise maneuvers; otherwise, you faced immediate defeat.
Motorslice has sparked nostalgia reminiscent of those early gaming experiences. Although its demo has been available for some time, it recently got an update during Steam Next Fest, introducing more demanding controls akin to those of Tomb Raider’s Lara Croft. Players must commit to every movement, knowing exactly where they’re headed.
Combat is unforgiving; the main character can withstand only one hit from powerful foes, necessitating an aggressive approach. Luckily, players can parry attacks by timing their own strikes just right. I’ve always enjoyed games that revolve around parrying mechanics.
What really captivates in Motorslice is its atmosphere. The game unfolds in a vast brutalist megastructure filled with pixelated details and a nostalgic charm reminiscent of the PS1’s style. It features a unique boss battle against a formidable truck, which requires you to utilize a special ability to climb and deal damage.
Despite some minor bugs—like inexplicably losing momentum or occasionally bursting into pixels—the game’s uncompromising challenge adds to its appeal. However, some dialogue moments may pull players out of their nostalgic reverie.
In summary, Motorslice combines elements of nostalgia, precision platforming, and engaging combat, making it one to watch as it heads towards its full release. It’s currently available for players to try on Steam.
