Alan Wake 2 Finally Turns Profitable After Over a Year and 2 Million Sales

Remedy's latest title, Alan Wake 2, has achieved profitability following substantial sales figures.

Alan Wake 2, Remedy’s unique game, has finally become profitable, more than a year post-launch. According to a financial report released today, the Finnish studio stated that sales of the sequel have exceeded two million copies, and it has started to generate royalties.

This turnaround didn’t happen immediately; Alan Wake 2 was launched in October 2023 and only began making profits at the end of 2024. Despite being Remedy’s fastest-selling title, reaching two million sales in just over a year still falls short compared to heavyweights like Silent Hill; for instance, Bloober’s Silent Hill 2 remake achieved that milestone only a few months post-launch.

During this wait for profitability, Remedy has been quite active. In February 2024, it acquired the rights to Control from publisher 505 Games for €17 million (around $17.7 million). Following that, in August, Remedy announced plans to self-publish Control 2 with help from Annapurna Pictures.

Annapurna is investing 50% of the development budget while also gaining rights to adapt Control and Alan Wake into TV shows and films. Despite facing challenges with its gaming division, the agreement remains intact, showing resilience amidst internal restructuring.

Additionally, in September, Remedy and Tencent entered a $17 million loan agreement, potentially convertible into Remedy shares, increasing Tencent’s stake in the company that already owns 14%.

Overall, with the financial boost from Tencent and the profits from Alan Wake 2, Remedy appears to be on a rebound, also managing several exciting new projects, including Control 2 and remakes for Max Payne 1 and 2, which are reportedly advancing in development.
