Loot Boxes Make Their Comeback in Overwatch 2

Overwatch 2 welcomes back loot boxes, bringing excitement to players with new rewards and changes.

It’s an exciting week for Overwatch 2 enthusiasts—new content is rolling out, including hero perks, a fresh third-person game mode, and the revival of loot boxes, which is particularly thrilling.

“Season 15 also features the return of loot boxes,” states a press release. “You will be able to earn a variety of cosmetics when collecting loot boxes. They will be available from weekly and event rewards.”

Additionally, players can earn one loot box through the free battle pass and two more via the Premium battle pass.

Loot boxes were previously removed at the launch of Overwatch 2 when the game transitioned to a free-to-play model. Blizzard opted for profits through in-game shops and battle pass sales rather than loot boxes, which have faced criticism for their gambling-like qualities and regulatory concerns.

In response to these issues, Overwatch 2 is adjusting its loot box system to be more transparent and user-friendly: “In addition to the drop rates below, we guarantee that a Rare or better item will drop in every box, with an Epic item in five consecutive boxes and a Legendary item within twenty consecutive boxes.”

  • Regular loot boxes have a 5.10% chance to include a Legendary item, a 21.93% chance for an Epic, a 96.26% chance for Rare, and a 97.97% chance for Common items.

  • Legendary loot boxes ensure at least one Legendary item, a 21.93% chance for an Epic, a 96.26% chance to find a Rare, and a 97.97% for a Common item.

While some argue against loot boxes, I’ve always thought they were a fun way to earn cosmetics, especially since you could obtain them by leveling up or completing challenges. During my time with Overwatch, I acquired every skin without spending any real money. Unfortunately, Overwatch 2 doesn’t offer such generous options, making this return more appealing to my wallet.

The new season of Overwatch 2 is set to kick off on February 18.
