Mortal Kombat 2 Delayed, But Mortal Kombat 3 Is Already Greenlit

The upcoming Mortal Kombat 2 movie is postponed to next year, while the progression of Mortal Kombat 3 is underway, signaling a strong confidence from the studios.

As reported by Eurogamer and Deadline, a third installment in the new Mortal Kombat trilogy has been confirmed during the New York Comic-Con. The second film, initially set to debut this month, is now rescheduled for May 15, 2026.

“Our friends at New Line and Warner Bros. are so happy with this movie,” series screenwriter Jeremy Slater conveyed at the Mortal Kombat 2 panel at the Comic-Con. “They are so excited, they’re so convinced there is a giant fanbase waiting for it, that they’ve already hired me to start writing the next installment.”
“Nuestros amigos de New Line y Warner Bros. están muy contentos con esta película. Están tan emocionados, están tan convencidos de que hay una gran base de fans esperándola, que ya me han contratado para comenzar a escribir la próxima entrega.”

According to Deadline, Warner Bros. and New Line have already greenlit the third movie, expecting significant success from Mortal Kombat 2. This confidence stems from positive test screenings and the second film’s red band trailer garnering over 107 million views on YouTube in just 24 hours.

Some familiar faces expected to return in Mortal Kombat 2 include Karl Urban reprising his role as Johnny Cage, while the 2021 film focused on an original character portrayed by Lewis Tan alongside other beloved characters from the series such as Scorpion, played by Hiroyuki Sanada.

Surrounding this success, Mortal Kombat 1 has become the best-selling fighting game of this generation. Despite this, some unsettling news looms as Dan Forden, the voice behind the iconic “Toasty!” line, has departed from NetherRealm after over 30 years.
