Skate's Free-to-Play Journey Brings in Over 15 Million Players

Despite facing mixed reviews, Skate's new free-to-play model has attracted a significant player base shortly after its launch.

Despite receiving mixed feedback, the latest installment of Skate has surprisingly amassed over 15 million players within just three weeks of its launch. This significant influx of gamers is attributed in part to its free-to-play model, appealing to a wide audience eager for a new skating experience.

The game currently holds a 66% “Mixed” rating on Steam, mainly due to lack of Steam Deck compatibility and a somewhat underwhelming open world experience as highlighted in over 33,000 user reviews. Many players describe the game as “fun but bland.” However, these criticisms have not deterred new players from diving into the game.

At launch, Skate witnessed around 30,000 concurrent users, but this number rocketed to a peak of 134,901 over its first weekend, showcasing how quickly the buzz around the game grew. Daily player counts have since stabilized between 50,000 and 80,000.

As the first season begins today, players can expect new skateable areas, cosmetics, and additional tasks and challenges, along with improvements to gameplay responsiveness.

“Wow thank you! Over 15 million players have jumped into San Vansterdam since we launched Early Access! Season 1 kicks off tomorrow, we can’t wait to skate the streets with everyone!” - Tweet by EA Skate
