How Ex-Blizzard Developers Created a New Fantasy Combat Experience

A look into how former Blizzard developers from Notorious Studios developed their new RPG extraction game emphasizing third-person combat.

In Legacy: Steel & Sorcery, ‘combat is king.’

Recently, I participated in a closed alpha for Legacy: Steel & Sorcery, a new extraction game blending high fantasy and third-person action combat. During the playtest, I experienced the thrill of headshotting skeletons and escaping from aggressive players.

Before the game’s release, I discussed with Chris Kaleiki, co-founder of Notorious Studios and former World of Warcraft class designer. He shared how the game evolved from his idea to revamp class dynamics in WoW with a focus on action.

Kaleiki stated, “I was trying a more action-based model… based on games like Dark Souls.” His vision, sparked by his exit from Blizzard in 2020, has been driven by an enthusiasm for MMO world PvP.

He explained, “World PvP allows players to explore an open world while pursuing their goals, creating organic player stories.” The emergence of the RPG extraction genre was unintentional as they worked to establish this new combat system, which was a significant learning curve.

Kaleiki emphasized that in Legacy, “combat is king”, aiming for satisfying game mechanics that feel impactful whether wielding an axe or shooting arrows.

Legacy: Steel & Sorcery is set to launch in early access soon, anticipated for an exciting gaming experience.
