Legendary Programmer and First US Video Game Champion Rebecca Heineman Faces Aggressive Cancer Treatment Fundraising

Rebecca Heineman, an early pioneer in the gaming industry and the first formal US video game champion, is raising funds to cope with the financial burden of an aggressive cancer diagnosis.

Rebecca Heineman, a stalwart of the gaming industry and the first official US video game champion, has launched a GoFundMe campaign to assist with her expenses stemming from an aggressive cancer diagnosis. The costs associated with her treatment are only partially covered by private insurance.

Having entered the gaming scene with titles like Space Invaders, Heineman has contributed to numerous games including The Bard’s Tale 3 and early adaptations of Doom. After attending PAX West this year, she began treatment, including chemotherapy for cancer in her lungs and liver—an expensive endeavor compounded by out-of-network medical bills.

“This is the fight for my life. Please help me,” she implored on her GoFundMe page while expressing her desire to continue creating games and comics.
