PS4 Expected to Lose Key Services Starting in 2026
The PlayStation 4 is set to lose access to several essential services, marking a significant shift in Sony's support for the last-generation console.
Sony is reportedly preparing to restrict several vital services for PlayStation 4 games in 2026, marking a crucial step in the company’s plan to phase out support for its last-gen console. This transition aligns with the upcoming 12th anniversary of the PS4, which was originally released on November 15, 2013.
The changes, as reported by Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson, involve depriving new PS4 games of integration with certain legacy PSN features—a total of six primary services—such as Activity Feed Web API and User Profiles. Existing PS4 games currently using these features will still have access.
Key Services Affected:
- Activity Feed Web API
- Shared Media Web API
- Title Small Storage
- Title User Storage
- Users and Profiles
- Word Filters
The implementation of these changes is expected to start in spring 2026, closely following the announcement to phase out PS4 titles from PlayStation Plus subscriptions, starting in January of that year.
As the gaming landscape evolves, this decision suggests that big-budget releases for the PS4 may dwindle, and while the console will continue to receive security patches, the end of major support might be nearing, especially with the anticipation surrounding the next generation, possibly set for late 2027.
