Players of Diablo 4 are expressing their frustration with the game’s Tempering mechanic, citing various instances showing why it requires revision in upcoming updates. Blizzard has shown willingness to modify features in Diablo 4, aligning with its live service and seasonal model, indicating that Tempering might also be reconsidered.
Despite initial hiccups with its seasonal model, many view Season 4, titled Loot Reborn, as a significant recovery effort. This season aimed to enhance gameplay and modify loot mechanics, but Tempering, which allows players to adjust gear properties at the Blacksmith, has come under fire. What was once considered a strategic addition has transformed into a point of contention among players, with many claiming it adds unnecessary complexity.
Players’ Discontent with Tempering
Originally, Tempering was implemented to provide players with more customization options for their loot, helping them tailor gear toward specific strategies. However, dissatisfaction has begun to brew within the community, with some labeling it the ‘worst system’ in the game. For example, Reddit user stormalong128 shared their experience of using a Natural Scheme Recipe in a video, only to receive the same affix five times consecutively before finally landing on Thorns.
Their complaints mirror a broader sentiment among players who have had negative encounters with Tempering. Responses to the discussion ranged from grievances about luck to concerns over limited options and the necessity of scrolls to reset attempts. Many criticize the reliance on RNG (random number generation) and the potential for repetitive stat rolls. Moreover, the mechanism’s limitations mean that a single poor roll could render an item effectively useless, prompting requests for features like undo options or safeguards against bad luck in roll selection.
As Season 10 recently kicked off on September 23, Blizzard has started adjusting the core gameplay loop, having already disabled the Druid’s Aspect of Wildrage due to its impact on skill cooldowns. Players remain hopeful that future iterations of the game will address these long-standing issues.
