Payday Studio Ends Development of Upcoming Dungeons and Dragons Title

Starbreeze Studios has decided to cancel its Dungeons and Dragons project to focus on enhancing the Payday franchise.

A new Dungeons and Dragons game by Starbreeze Studios has been canceled, opting instead to channel resources to boost the Payday series. Reports indicate most of the developers involved in the canceled game will retain their positions as Starbreeze redistributes them to other projects.

Starbreeze’s restructuring is aimed at reallocating approximately 255 million Swedish krona (about $27.1 million) intended for the third quarter of the 2025 fiscal year. Even as some roles may be terminated, the company is committed to assisting those impacted in transitioning to new opportunities within the industry.

Kristjansson emphasized the profitability of the Payday franchise, having accrued more than $425 million in revenue and engaging over 50 million players globally, stating, “This is about sharpening our focus to create the strongest long-term value for our players, our people, and our shareholders.”

Although details were sparse about the now-defunct Dungeons and Dragons title, early reports suggested it was set to be a co-op live-service game, aiming for a grand storytelling experience. Despite this outcome, Kristjansson thanked the development team and Wizards of the Coast for their contributions.
