Layoffs Follow Record Success for Funcom's Dune: Awakening
Despite being Funcom's biggest release in over three decades, Dune: Awakening leads the company to layoffs.
In the gaming industry, job stability seems elusive. Funcom has announced layoffs despite the successful launch of its survival MMO, Dune: Awakening. The company described the title as “the biggest release we’ve had in our 32-year history of game development.” However, they stated that restructuring is necessary as they transition from development to managing the game’s long-term operations.
As a result, many employees will be let go. “[Dune] has already shown remarkable potential, and the right path forward is to concentrate on delivering new content and features,” Funcom stated. They did not disclose how many employees would be affected.
This decision follows a wider trend in the industry, where significant layoffs have recently impacted companies like Avalanche and Firaxis. The news underscores an unfortunate reality: success in the gaming industry offers little protection against job loss.
