Final Fantasy 14 Continues to Generate Major Revenue for Square Enix Amid Mixed Community Feedback

Despite some dissatisfaction from players, Final Fantasy 14's latest expansion, Dawntrail, significantly contributes to Square Enix's profits.

Continued Success and Challenges for Final Fantasy 14

Recently, Final Fantasy 14 marked its 10th anniversary, solidifying its status as a vital asset for Square Enix. According to a financial report for the fiscal year ending March 2024, the game accounted for about 68.4% of the company’s operating profits.

Following the release of its most recent expansion, Dawntrail, which debuted in early 2025, new reports showcase the game’s enduring profitability, with the MMO segment generating approximately ¥13.1 billion (around $86 million).

Despite these impressive figures, community sentiment toward Dawntrail has been less than enthusiastic. Players have voiced concerns over its narrative direction and the slow pace of content delivery. Many fans wonder if the excitement surrounding the expansion will translate into ongoing player engagement or if it’s merely a fleeting success.

As Square Enix’s financial reports indicate, the recent increase in net sales and operating income in the MMO segment correlates directly with the release of Dawntrail.

A Bright but Wary Future

While the initial profits from a new expansion can indicate success, they do not always reflect long-term player satisfaction. Past disappointments with other titles, like World of Warcraft’s Shadowlands, have shown that initial sales numbers can mask deeper issues within the game’s community.

The upcoming update scheduled for March is anticipated to address current player frustrations and reinvigorate the game’s casual and mid-core audiences. It remains to be seen how effectively Final Fantasy 14 will navigate the shifting moods of its long-time subscribers.

For now, though, it appears that Dawntrail will continue to drive profits, providing a solid income stream for Square Enix, unless subsequent expansions fail to meet player expectations.
