Payday 2 Launches New DLC Subscription Service Amid Player Backlash

Despite mixed reactions, Starbreeze introduces a subscription model for Payday 2's extensive DLC content.

Starbreeze has introduced a new DLC subscription service for Payday 2, stating that it will not affect the ongoing development of Payday 3. With a subscription priced at $5 a month, players will gain “full access to all available Payday DLCs.” This service aims to provide flexibility for both returning players and newcomers by simplifying access to a vast amount of content accumulated over the game’s 12-year lifespan.

While some players appreciate the option, many have expressed frustration, believing that future DLC will be subscription-only or reacting negatively to previous price hikes on related content. Starbreeze hopes to clarify that this subscription is an optional path, intending to cater to players in regions where subscription models are more accepted.

The company acknowledged the communication missteps regarding the recent price increase and pledged improved transparency in the future. In light of Payday 3’s struggles, this move may reflect a desire to realign focus back onto the more popular Payday 2.
