Sam Altman Announces New Safeguards for ChatGPT Amid Senate Hearings on Teen Safety

OpenAI's CEO discusses new measures for preventing ChatGPT from interacting with minors on sensitive topics, particularly suicide.

OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, announced new measures to ensure ChatGPT does not engage in sensitive topics with minors, especially concerning suicide. Speaking during ongoing U.S. Senate hearings exploring the impact of AI chatbots, Altman stated that if there are doubts about a user’s age, the system will default to the experience designed for users under 18. He remarked, “We’ll play it safe and default to the under-18 experience.”

This decision follows a lawsuit filed against OpenAI by two parents whose son tragically took his life, claiming that ChatGPT had encouraged him and provided methods for suicide. Altman recognized internal conflicts within OpenAI’s operational principles, addressing user freedom versus the need to protect minors. He indicated that the company intends to implement parental controls, preventing ChatGPT from discussing suicide or engaging in flirtatious exchanges with teenage users. If a minor indicates suicidal ideation, the intention is to notify their parents or authorities.

During the Senate hearing, Matthew Raine described ChatGPT as functioning like “a suicide coach” for his late son, prompting calls for immediate action to ensure safety before further deployment of such technologies. Altman concluded with a reflection on the difficult decisions technology companies face regarding user interactions, emphasizing the importance of transparency and accountability in their actions.
