A New Leviathan Emerges in Subnautica 2

Subnautica 2 unveils a fearsome new creature known as the Collector, set to enhance the exploration experience in the game.

Subnautica 2 has introduced a new type of Leviathan named the Collector. Representing a massive deep-sea predator, this creature significantly heightens the exploration anxiety in Subnautica 2. A close-up reveals the design, a squid-like entity influenced by Cthulhu, intended to stand out among past creatures. Cory Strader, who leads the visual development for the game, stated the aim was to create a distinctly terrifying predator.

Visual development processes have led the team to create a captivating model with four long tentacles and a glowing split-body effect, aiming for both shock and visibility. The latest devlog shows the integration of advanced AI techniques with Unreal Engine, enhancing the emergent gameplay experience. It mentions the Collector as an easily provoked creature that reacts strongly to unfamiliar entities.

In previous installments, various Leviathans in the franchise have created terrifying yet captivating encounters. The upcoming game promises to introduce both returning and new Leviathans, projecting towards an early access release in 2026, despite earlier target delays and controversial studio management shifts.
