EA Provides Clarification on Battlefield 6 Crossplay Mechanics

EA has issued a clarification regarding crossplay in the upcoming Battlefield 6 game, which has important implications for players on different platforms.

EA has clarified the operation of crossplay in Battlefield 6, stating that disabling the feature will limit players to matching only with users on their respective platforms. Earlier, the game’s publisher suggested that console players could still play together with their counterparts from different console brands while having crossplay turned off; this is now confirmed to be erroneous with the game’s launch approaching on October 10, 2025.

In detail, enabling crossplay allows for a broader player pool, enhancing the speed of match-making, while disabling it may lead to longer wait times due to more limited player options. Players on consoles will have the option to select whether to engage in crossplay, whereas PC users will have crossplay activated by default. Also, a subscription to PlayStation Network or Xbox Game Pass will be needed for online multiplayer engagements.

Important Clarification from EA
With less than a month remaining until the release of Battlefield 6, the game developers released essential clarification concerning the game’s crossplay functionality. Reports suggest that EA will not allow console-only crossplay as previously hinted, and that players from other consoles will be favored in matchmaking over PC users. Turning off crossplay will restrict match selections to PlayStation-only or Xbox-only groups.

This statement contradicts earlier remarks from Matthew Nickerson of Ripple Effect, who indicated that cross-platform play would still be viable even with crossplay disabled. Player engagement in crossplay features remains at the discretion of those on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, though it’s clear this feature will not permit cross-platform play with consoles turned off. Despite the confusion, the genre of crossplay features is designed for users to enjoy at their own pace.

The Crossplay Discussion

The ongoing discussions surrounding crossplay particularly arise from the advantages often associated with PC players, such as superior controls and hardware capabilities, which may lead to disparities in competitive balance. EA continues to actively combat cheating in its games. With rumors surfacing regarding a potential Battle Royale mode, it remains uncertain if similar crossplay configurations will be enacted there.
