Capcom’s Resident Evil Re:Verse, a spin-off deathmatch game set in the popular horror franchise, will cease operations soon. The announcement mentioned that the game will fulfill its intended purpose this June.
Launched in October 2022, Re:Verse allowed six players to engage in combat as various beloved characters from the Resident Evil series, such as Leon Kennedy and Ada Wong. However, the game will be taken offline only two years after its debut due to disappointing player engagement and negative feedback.
The specifics of the shutdown are:
- All services will conclude on June 29.
- The game and additional downloadable content will be removed from digital storefronts by March 3.
In a statement, Capcom explained that Re:Verse was launched to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Resident Evil, and their expectations regarding its popularity have largely been met since its release. However, they felt it had reached a satisfactory closure point.
Despite the positive remarks about the game’s significance to the franchise, stats paint a less rosy picture—Re:Verse saw a decline in concurrent players shortly after its launch. Initially, it peaked at over 2,000 players, only to drop below 100 shortly thereafter, with only 44 players currently active.
The game’s Steam rating is categorized as ‘Mostly Negative’, with only 34% of nearly 3,000 reviews being positive. Some players criticized the game heavily, pointing to monotonous gameplay and poor controls as points of contention. As development continues for future Resident Evil titles, it seems that Re:Verse will quietly exit, leaving its impact on players as a fleeting memory.
