NBN 750: The Tier to Avoid in Australia's New High-Speed Internet Services

A critical look at the NBN 750 service, outlining its inferior value compared to other tiers like NBN 500 and NBN 1000.

When considering an upgrade to one of Australia’s new NBN services, the NBN 750 plan appears to be a less attractive option compared to alternatives like NBN 500 and NBN 1000. The NBN 750 plan lacks competitiveness both in speed and value, especially when you evaluate the pricing structures across different plans.

Overview of Current NBN Plans

The NBN can provide speeds that vary greatly based on the plan selected. If you’re currently subscribed to NBN 100 using fibre-to-the-premises or hybrid fibre coaxial connections, your service will often upgrade you to NBN 500 automatically, which could be sufficient for most users.

Notably, Superloop offers NBN 1000 which delivers much greater speed at a competitive price of AU$85 per month for the first six months, paired with 100Mbps uploads. In contrast, the NBN 750 service charges AU$89 for only 50Mbps uploads, and its price hike after introductory offers comes close to NBN 1000’s standard rate.

A clearer comparison shows NBN 750’s weaknesses:

Plan Introductory Price Ongoing Monthly Bill Annual Total
NBN 750 AU$89 AU$104 AU$1,158
NBN 1000 AU$85 AU$109 AU$1,164

While the annual difference may seem negligible, the performance and upload speeds make NBN 1000 the much better choice for just a small additional monthly cost. After examining NBN 750, it’s highly advisable to consider skipping this tier altogether in favor of either NBN 500 or NBN 1000, providing you with significantly better value without compromising on speed.
