Australia Doubles Its Fastest Internet Speeds with New NBN 2000 Plans
NBN 2000 plans have been rolled out in Australia, claiming to double internet speeds but raising questions about necessity and cost.
Everyone has been focused on the recent upgrades to the NBN 500 plans, which automatically upgrade users from an NBN 100 plan if they have FTTP or HFC connections. However, few discuss the new NBN 2000 plans, which can now theoretically provide internet speeds up to 2,000 Mbps—double the previous maximum.
These new tiers are branded as ‘Hyperfast’, and while that may sound dramatic, it isn’t an exaggeration by Australian standards. However, these high-speed plans come at a price, with the cheapest option starting at AU$149 per month from Southern Phone.
Users need to ensure their network termination device (NTD), which connects the NBN to their home network, is compatible with the new tier. This requires checking with the provider or consulting the NBN website.
As is evident, to benefit from these speeds, you’ll also need a Wi-Fi 7 router or at least a Wi-Fi 6E device. Here’s the current state of the NBN 2000 plans:
ISP | Monthly Price | First Year Cost |
---|---|---|
Southern Phone | AU$149 | AU$1,788 |
AGL | AU$164 | AU$1,968 |
Superloop | AU$165 | AU$1,980 |
Launtel | AU$168 | AU$2,016 |
Tangerine | AU$189.90 | AU$2,098.80 |
Aussie Broadband | AU$189 | AU$2,268 |
Is the significant increase in speed worth the additional monthly costs? This is the essential question for users who primarily engage in gaming or streaming 4K content, as enhanced download rates won’t necessarily improve latency, which is crucial in competitive gaming.
