'Ya jackass!' European Pro Golfers Embrace VR Headsets to Prepare for American Ryder Cup Crowd

European pro golfers are using VR technology as part of their training to simulate the intense atmosphere expected at the upcoming Ryder Cup.

European pro golfers are utilizing virtual reality headsets in their training regimen to help mitigate the vocal distractions from lively crowds expected at the upcoming Ryder Cup. As they prepare to compete next week, these golfers aim to shield themselves from the noise, stepping into a virtual environment that mimics the rowdy atmosphere they might face.

The Ryder Cup, known for heavy competition, has seen the European team securing victory in seven out of the last ten tournaments, yet they haven’t won on U.S. soil since 2012. As a result, the pressure is mounting for the team competing at Bethpage Black Course in Farmingdale, New York.

McIlroy expressed his openness to how immersive the virtual reality experience could become. “Go as far as you want,” he remarked about the technology’s potential to replicate the crowd’s sights and sounds, indicating that the experience aims to prepare them mentally for any situation.

The implementation of insult-laden shouts during practice sessions serves as a humorous method to toughen players against crowd jeers, reminiscent of past Ryder Cup tournaments known for their atmosphere. As indicated by McIlroy, some insults programmed into the headsets remain unpublished, maintaining an air of mystery regarding the VR experience’s depth.

This innovative approach aims to bolster the mental resilience of the players, preparing them for the vibrant energy they will encounter come Friday’s tee-off.
