Europe's First Exascale Supercomputer Goes Live with Incredible Specs

The JUPITER project, featuring 24,000 Nvidia GH200 Superchips, is now operational and significantly enhances computing capabilities across various research fields.

Europe’s fastest supercomputer is now operational, boasting extraordinary specifications. The JUPITER project (Joint Undertaking Pioneer for Innovative and Transformative Exascale Research) held its official ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Forschungszentrum Jülich campus in Germany, attended by renowned European scientists and a few politicians.

JUPITER is organized into 50 container modules spread over a 2,300 square meter area, featuring a remarkable amount of hardware. The Booster module contains approximately 6,000 nodes, interconnected through 24,000 Nvidia GH200 Grace Hopper Superchips using the Quantum-2 InfiniBand networking system, supported by a multitude of Arm-based CPU cores—288 per node.

The adjoining Cluster module consists of over 1,300 nodes, housing Rhea1 processors that are engineered by SiPearl. Each node is equipped with two chips, containing 80 Arm Neoverse Zeus cores each.

JUPITER has the capacity to surpass 90 exaflops of AI performance, handling more than one quintillion FP64 operations per second at peak capacity, marking it as one of the most powerful supercomputers in the world.

With 51,000 network connections, JUPITER processes data three times faster than the entire global data traffic, backed by nearly 1 exabyte of storage, equivalent to 1,000,000 terabytes.

Used for various research applications, JUPITER will focus on climate science, neuroscience for drug discovery, and quantum simulation, among others. For instance, the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology plans to employ JUPITER to simulate climate predictions and extreme weather events.

This innovative machine signifies a great leap in computational power, promising significant advancements in various fields of study.
